AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your content chosen as the direct answer to a question — in an AI assistant, a voice search, or a Google featured snippet — instead of just ranking as a link someone has to click. It’s the close cousin of GEO; the difference is mostly emphasis.
Why it matters
A growing share of searches end without a click. The answer gets read aloud, shown in a snippet, or written by an AI. If your content isn’t the source that answer is built from, you’re invisible at the exact moment someone is deciding.
How it relates to GEO and SEO
SEO aims for a ranked link. GEO aims to be cited inside an AI-generated answer specifically. AEO is the broader umbrella — being the answer on any answer surface, AI or not (voice, featured snippets, AI Overviews). In practice the work overlaps heavily: clear, direct, well-structured, credible content.
The common misreading
Treating AEO as a separate discipline needing a whole new playbook. The fundamentals are the same as good SEO — AEO just optimizes for being extracted as the answer, not only for the ranking.
